NOTE: Order now! Hardneck garlic ships in the fall for fall planting.
Organic naturally grown in Oregon, Chesnok Red hardneck garlic is a beautiful deep purple striped garlic that holds its flavor after cooking or roasting! A top-seller at our farm, Chesnok Red forms a large plump bulb that produces an average of 10-15 cloves per head. No home garden should be without this reliable hardneck garlic variety.
HOW TO GROW GARLIC: Plant only the largest individual cloves; eat the smaller ones! Plant the individual cloves into rich, loose soil 6 inches apart in rows 1 foot or more apart . Plant about 2 inches below the soil line, with the plump, rounded side down and pointy end up. A heavy layer of mulch is recommended. When the leaves have turned brown in the fall, the crop is ready to harvest. Pull up the bulb and, with the leaves still attached, let it dry in the sun for a few hours. Then spread it out in a dry, well-ventilated place until the leaves are papery, usually 2 or three weeks depending on relative humidity. Unless you are going to use the plant tops to braid them, cut them off after the curing process and store the bulbs in a cool, dry, well-ventilated location.
