Wisteria frutescens 'Amethyst Falls' is a favorite at our farm for its beautiful blue flowers, delightful fragrance and well behaved growth. Amethyst Falls is a native, non-invasive, repeat blooming wisteria that is also very cold hardy. Amethyst Falls Wisteria shines in the garden with attractive glossy green foliage and true blue pea-like flowers that appear in the spring and then again in the summer. This wonderful hardy wisteria will bloom three times a year when mature. Very fragrant, Wisteria Amethyst Falls is ideal to plant on a very sturdy trellis, to train along a wall or to hang over a pergola. Wisteria 'Amethyst Falls' is a lovely addition to any garden and will attract butterflies, hummingbirds and is highly deer resistant. Wisterias do not like to be moved once that have settled into a garden spot for several years so plan for the future when planting your Wisteria vine in your garden. This wisteria is grown and shipped in a 1 gallon nursery trade container trained upright on a stake.
WISTERIA CULTURAL INFORMATION: Wisteria is a member of the Pea family, Fabaceae (formerly Leguminoseae). The genus was named in honor of an anatomy professor at the University of Pennsylvania, Caspar Wistar (1761-1818). Wisteria vines produce lovely, fragrant flowers that come in a variety of colors including white, pink, blue or shades of purple. Wisteria plants are vigorous growing vines that are ideal for training over a sunny wall, up a very sturdy trellis or over a stout pergola. To enhance flowering, Wisterias require ample space for the roots to 'run' and require regular pruning. Always purchase Wisteria plants that have been grown from cuttings or grafted rather than seed grown plants. Wisteria vines grown from seed typically will remain in a juvenile stage for 10 to 15 years or longer during which time they will not bloom. Wisteria plants that are grafted, and plants grown from cuttings or layered from a flowering plant will usually begin flowering within 1-2 years.
